Toxic Firefighting Foam Lawsuits

Lawsuits related to AFFF, or aqueous film-forming foam, typically involve claims against manufacturers for alleged health and environmental damages caused by the firefighting foam. These lawsuits also pertain to firefighting foam containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Plaintiffs assert that exposure to AFFF chemicals has led to health issues such as cancer, as well as contamination of water sources. These lawsuits seek compensation for medical expenses and damages incurred as a result of AFFF exposure.

What is AFFF & PFAS?

Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) is a firefighting foam specifically designed to suppress flammable liquid fires by forming a film that cuts off the fire’s oxygen supply. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), which are sometimes used as ingredients in AFFF to enhance its effectiveness in fighting fires. In essence, AFFF is the firefighting foam product used in fire suppression, while PFAS are the specific chemicals, including PFOA and PFOS, which may be present in AFFF formulations. PFAS are of concern due to their persistence in the environment and potential health risks associated with exposure.

Thousands of cases have already been filed in order to hold the manufacturers accountable for putting profits over safety. Claimants all over the country are still getting involved due to the extent of exposure to these toxic products and health issues that could arise. In October 2023, the defendants, including large corporations Dupont and 3M, agreed to pay $10.3 billion to settle all cases. To this day, there are still immediate health concerns about the risks of chemicals associated with AFFF and PFAS.
